BREAST ENLARGEMENTWikipedia.org Definition: A breast implant is a prosthesis used to enlarge the size of a woman's breasts (known as breast augmentation) for cosmetic reasons, to reconstruct the breast (e.g. after a mastectomy or to correct genetic deformities), or as an aspect of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery... A Breast implant or breast augmentation is used to reconstruct the breast. It is often used for enlargement purposes but also as a replacement after a mastectomy. It is also used in male to female sex reassignment surgery. It is the third most common preformed cosmetic surgery performed in the United States. Breast Implant Advances The technology of breast implants was introduced in the late 1950s. Since then the technology has progressed significantly. We are now considered to be in what is either the 4th or 5th generation of implants. The problem with the 2nd generation is that implants were made with a very liquid type of silicone gel fillers. There thin shells had a tendency to leak small portions of silicone. In the 3rd and forth generation had a more cohesive jel along with a thicker shell which helped to minimized leaking. Pending US approval is a “gummy Bear implant”. It is High-Cohesive and made with thicker gel filler. Dr Judit Puskas of the University of Akron is developing a new type of implant that is made out of a biorubber called polyisobutylene. It is a lighter and stronger material than silicone making it less likely to rupture. This rubber also contains the ability to release drugs that cause growth of the implant capsules. This technology prevents coronary arteries from being blocked by scare tissue. |
